Le Mans Posters 1960 - 1969

These Le Mans posters are vintage and original.

Early original posters from the 24-hour races command astronomic prices if and when they ever surface, and reproductions are abound. Even posters from the 60's are priced beyond the average collector's pocket and the 70's posters are following the same trend. The posters have become so collectible that the official body, L'Automobile Club de L'Ouest, allows them to be sold at the circuit in order to prevent the theft of those actually used to advertise the event !

All of the Le Mans posters are collectible and some of the images are truly outstanding. Beginning collectors should be careful when purchasing later posters to buy only mint copies, as they are reasonably easy to find. However, condition on the earlier posters becomes much more subjective and rarity begins to take priority.

Vintage original 24 Heures du Mans Poster 1961.

June 10 & 11, 1961.

This poster is part of the so-called "Major Illustrators" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1954 - 1963 and in which the cream of the crop of French motorsport illustrators such as Geo Ham, Jeudon and Michel Beligond were hired for the design of the race posters.

The poster shows a fantastic image, by Michel Beligond, of the # 12 Ferrari 250 TRI/60 powering its way out of the Esses and heading towards Tertre Rouge during the previous edition in 1960.

The combination of warm colors represents the arrival of dusk, highlighting the red Ferrari in the center of the poster. This year, 1961, the race was part of the Sports Car World Championship.

16 x 23 inches
41 x 58 cm

Decent condition for its age but with pinholes and a small (2 cm / < 1 inch) tear which will be virtually invisible once properly framed & matted and has been folded in 4. The price has been adjusted accordingly.

The race was won by Phil Hill & Olivier Gendebien in their # 10 Ferrari 250 TRI/61 (S/N 0794TR) with a total of 333 laps to their name.

Vintage original 24 Heures du Mans Poster 1961.

June 10 & 11, 1961.

This poster advertised the "3eme Criterium International de Vitesse Motocycliste 300 - 500 cc" which was of course a motorcycle race AND the tests / qualifying sessions for the upcoming 24 Heures du Mans.

The artwork shows an artist impression (by Beligond) of a motorcycle racing side by side with a Ferrari sportscar.

The race itself was won by Lorenzo Bandini & Ludovico Scarfiotti in their # 21 Ferrari 250 P (S/N 0814) with a total of 339 laps to their name.

This poster is part of the so-called "Modern Photographic Approach" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1964 - 1971.

The basis of the 1965 Le Mans poster is a photograph, taken by Le Mans photographer Andre Delourmel, of the start of the 1964 running of the Le Mans race with the field storming towards the famous Dunlop curve. The colors of the photograph were heavily touched up for use on the poster.

The race was won by Jochen Rindt & Masten Gregory in their # 21 Ferrari 250 LM (S/N 5893) with a total of 348 laps to their name.

For Ferrari, this would be the last time that they won the 24 Heures du Mans...

Vintage 1966 24 Heures du Mans Race Poster.

June 18 & 19, 1966.

It measures approximately:
40 x 60 cm.
15.5 x 23.5 inches.

This poster is in very good condition for its age with strong and vivid colors but it does have a good number of pinholes which just add to the character without distracting from the overall appearance.

This poster is part of the so-called "Modern Photographic Approach" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1964 - 1971.

The poster is based on a photo taken by Le Mans photographer Andre Delourmel and shows the 1965 pack under braking for the Tertre Rouge section of the track. In the background the famous Dunlop bridge is clearly visible. The photo was heavily touched up for use on the poster and the touch-ups have been done with paint on an original photo with out-of-focus edges.

The race was won by New-Zealanders Bruce McLaren & Chris Amon in their Shelby American entered Ford MKII (S/N 1046) with a total of 360 laps to their name.

This poster is part of the so-called "Modern Photographic Approach" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1964 - 1971.

The layout and production of this poster were in the hands of Imprimerie Oberthur who realized this poster based on an anonymous photograph of the starting grid of the 1966 edition. It prominently features the # 29 Ferrari 275 GTB/C S/N 09035 of Piers Courage and Roy Pike who would be the highest finishing Ferrari in 1966 with their 8th place.

The race was won by Dan Gurney & AJ Foyt in their # 1 Shelby American Ford GT MK IV (S/N J6) with a total of 388 laps to their name.
