Vintage 1956 photo of the start of the 24 Heures du Mans.
This is a vintage 1956 photo of the start of the 1956 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
It was taken only a fraction of a second after the flag dropped and the drivers are running across the track towards their cars which, in those years, were lined up in front of the pits boxes.
Clearly visible are the first 6 cars which are:
- Factory Jaguar D-Type of Mike Hawthorn and Ivor Bueb - 6th overall with 280 laps
- Factory Jaguar D-Type of Paul Frere and Desmond Titterington - DNF - Crash in lap 2
- Factory Jaguar D-Type of Jack Fairman and Ken Wharton - DNF - Crash in lap 3
- Ecurie Ecosse Jaguar D-Type of Ron Flockhart and Ninian Sanderson - RACE WINNERS with 300 laps!
- Equipe Nationale Belge Jaguar D-Type of Jacques Swaters and Freddy Rousselle - 4th overall with 284 laps
- Private Jaguar XK-140 of Robert Walshaw and Peter Bolton - Disqualified after 209 laps due to illegal refuelling
A great memento of a great race!
The photo measures some 14 x 9 cm or 4.5 x 3.5 inches.
