Vintage Original 1952 Mercedes Benz Victory Poster 24 Hours of Le Mans.
This is a vintage original 1952 Mercedes poster annoucing their hard-fought double victory in the 1952 running of Les 24 Heures du Mans.
French driver Pierre Levegh, who was driving his privately entered Talbot Lago T26 GS Spider, was leading by a comfortable 4 laps when his engine gave up the ghost and the lead was passed to Herrmann Lang and Fritz Riess in their Mercedes-Benz 300 SL with Theo Helfrich and Helmut Niedermayr, also on a 300 SL in second place.
Levegh, although officially partenered with Rene Marchand, had no relief driver and had been at the wheel for 22 hours and 45 minutes (!) when the Talbot's engine blew up.
Levegh tried it two more time at Le Mans with his ageing Talbot before moving over to Mercedes-Benz in 1955 which lead to, what is considered, the biggest catastrophy in motor racing history...
Completely unaware of what the future held in store, Mercedes proudly issued this poster in the second half of 1952 to annouce their victory.
