The 1973 Le Mans poster is part of the "The Global Appeal of the Race" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1972 to 1974.
The 1973 poster is based on a heavily touched-up photograph of the start of the 1972 edition of the 24 Heures du Mans. Design was by the Le Pilier Vert agency while the production was in the hands of the Imprimerie Commerciale in Le Mans.
1972 (the year of the photograph) was the year of the "French Charge". The start was given by Georges Pompidou, President of the French Republic, and a French car won the race for the first time since 1950. The poster is an unashamed expression of the French pride in 1972.
The 1973 race was won by Henri Pescarolo & Gerard Larousse in their # 11 Matra Simca MS670B with a total of 356 laps to their name.

Vintage June 1973 photograph of a hectic pitstop of Ferrari Daytona Competizione S/N 14407 during the 1973 running of the 24 heures du Mans.
The car, driven by Jean-Claude Guérie and Cyril Grandet, was entered by the Shark Racing Team from France.
The car had to abandon in lap 174, 17 hours into the race, with gearbox problems.
The car, which has a very extensive racing history (amongst others 3 Le Mans entries and 3 Tour de France entries) survives to this day and seems to reside in an important Ferrari collection in The Netherlands.
The photograph is in near mint condition with only some very slight knocks to the corners.
It measures some 24 x 17,5 cm or 9 x 7 inches and is glossy black & white. It carries the photographer's stamp on the back.
This is a vintage print, i.e. printed shortly after the original image was captured on film.

This is a vintage & original photo of the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 (S/N 11572-002) of Escuderia Brescia Corse, driven by Carlo Facetti, "Pam" & Teodoro Zeccoli.
The trio manged a 15th place with a total of 299 laps to their name.
It measures some 4.5 x 3.5 inches (12 x 8 cm), is black & white and has a typical 1970's "ragged edge" finish.
