Vintage 1939 Le Mans Handbill / Flyer.
These flyers were handed out at the race to spectators to show them around the track.
Very scarce as most of them were tossed away after the race or disappeared into the mists of time and the pre WW2 versions are even scarcer.
VERY good condition for its age with some minor browing to the edges which is normal for a colored-paper piece of over 70 years old.
It measures some 10.5 cm x 24.5 cm and unfolds to 42 x 24.5 cm.
Amongst others, it shows the seating arrangements on the main grandstands, an aerial view of the main facilities, a list of the 50 participants, a track map and a pricelist for all the different tickets, garages (parkings) and camp sites.
The illustration on the front page follows that of the program booklet and it is generally attibuted to Andre Galland who drew a good number of covers in the pre-war era but given the fact that this illustration is not signed "A.G.", but simply "E.", this must be a different illustrator. The illustration on the program cover does not show this simple signature which could be the source of the confusion.
The 1939 edition was the very last pre WW2 24 Heures du Mans and it was won by Jean-Pierre Wimille and Pierre Veyron (yes, this is the man after whom Bugatti named the Veyron!) in their Bugatti Type 57 C Tank with a total of 3354 KM to their name.
Only 1 available which is the very first we have ever found!
Vintage 1949 Le Mans 24 Hours by Roger Labric and Geo Ham.
This book, issued in 1949 by the A.C.O. (organizing body of the 24 Heures du Mans), if often considered as THE prized possession for serious Le Mans collectors.
This is one of the VERY few surviving NUMBERED copies!
As a matter of fact, this number 528 of the 1000 numbered copies that were issued.
VERY scarce as in our 15+ years of trading Le Mans memorabilia, this is the very first one we ever managed to source!
We are very proud to be able to offer for sale this book which survives in excellent condition for this book despite its slightly weak binding.
Being a BIG book, some 25 x 32 cm or 10 x 13 inches and 471 pages (it is some 6 cm or 2.5 inches thick!) it is a very detailed account of the 24 Hours races as held in the pre WW2 era (1923 - 1939) including stats and reports on the drivers with countless illustrations and portraits by the fantastic artist, Geo Ham (Georges Hamel).
Please note that this numbered edition is actually THICKER than the "regular" version despite having the exact same contents and same number of pages.
Very, VERY scarce and an absolute "must have" for the endearing Le Mans collector!
Only 1 available of course !
Part of the original Issue back in 1949 of which only few survive to this day and of which most have found their way into collections where they will probably stay for ever.
We are very proud to be able to offer for sale this book which survives in decent condition but, as the photos clearly show, with a slightly shabby spine and a weak rear cover. So, no loose or missing pages!
Being a BIG book, some 25 x 32 cm or 10 x 13 inches and 471 pages (it is some 4.75 cm or 1.8 inches thick!) it is a very detailed account of the 24 Hours races as held in the pre WW2 era (1923 - 1939) including stats and reports on the drivers with countless illustrations and portraits by the fantastic artist, Geo Ham (Georges Hamel).
